A new law came into effect in the beginning of 2021 in California that I think will really change the world for animal shelters. As of January 1st 2021 any animal that leaves a shelter whether RETURNED TO THE OWNER or adopted is required to receive a chip. Obviously we always chip adopted animals but this also requires RTO's which helps us from wondering, "Is this the dog that was here last week" but also allows for a larger number of field RTO's and prevents animals from coming to the shelter. It probably will not create an immediate change to the animals coming to the shelter but the goal is for it to be reduced over time. Also it will hopefully bring more awareness to the need of microchips in pets!
This blog was originally created for communications with volunteers, hence the old name. As we move forward this will be used to help volunteers and staff to have information and updates about the shelter.
